Preparation…More than Packing…Prepare your Heart…
Serving others is central to the Christian faith. Jesus said that to love the Lord our God with all our heart soul, mind and strength is the first and greatest commandment. Second only that, he said we are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments (Matthew 22:37-40).
Isn’t Jesus to be our example on this quest toward balanced and holy living? Mark 10:45 reminds us, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Now Jesus, more than any of us, was on a mission with eternal significance. And yet, he came to serve. He looked beyond himself and served the people around him. It makes me wonder how significant most of the things on my to-do list really are.
Short term mission offers us an invitation to look beyond our own world. It calls us to experience someone else’s reality and to give generously of ourselves. Do we have to go to distant lands to serve others? Of course not! But it is often on the journey to places that are far away and uncomfortable to us that we begin to see God, ourselves, and the world more clearly. (God often took his servants on journey when he wanted to get their attention.) We begin to connect the dots between living a life of service while on a short term mission trip, and living that kind of life here at home.
Do you have this kind of reputation…that you give yourself to serve others not only on short term mission but also in daily life? Something to think about…
