Work Day 2

We started off the morning by visiting Nueva Esperanza.  We saw the finished product from our work last summer.  When we pulled into the town, we saw a PE class using the field playing soccer.  Last year we saw the same teacher teaching his class in the street, so we saw first hand the difference it was making.  We recognized several of the children we met last year, which was really neat.

We continued on to Panematsalem, and continued work on the field there, leveling the ground, moving rock and sand, mixing concrete by hand, and carting it to squares being prepared by others.  Doing God's work is a very tiring task.

We are in the rainy season here.  It cut our day short at about 4:30, which was a welcome relief.  It rained again quite heavily in the evening while we were eating dinner.  Luckily the hotel has some great places to congregate and stay out of the rain.  Much like Indiana, weather can be difficult to predict, and changes quickly.

Work Day 1: Updating a Basketball Court

Today we began reconstructing a basketball court in the village of Paninatzalam. Tom told us the court was 20 years old and need of major updating. We began the afternoon by leveling the ground, and installing metal braces to form the rows to create the squares. Everyone had a chance to try something new whether it was leveling the ground, installing metal braces, cutting rebar, drilling holes, mixing concrete, sifting sand, pouring concrete, leveling concrete, and/or roughing the concrete surface.

We made it...

We arrived yesterday at around 11:30am Guatemala City. By the way, we are on US mountain time. After a long three hour bus ride we have arrived at Panajachel (Pana). Yeah!!!

Traveling notes...

A couple thoughts as we prepare for the trip:
- The weather is supposed to be in the mid to high 60's during the day, and low 50's at night. With the heat index being 100 degrees here in Indiana, it may be easy to forget to pack some heavier clothes.
- For those who have not traveled to high altitude places, sun screen is very important. UV levels are much higher, and sun burn is a real concern, even on cool days. Also, be prepared to take it easy the first day or two while your body aclimates. - The current exchange rate is 1 USD for 7.82 Q.  This is very similar to last year
- Our hotel has a web page that is kindof neat: http://www.caciqueinn.com/
- Don't forget to bring some snacks, cards / games, maybe a book for down times.
- Emergency phone numbers for family and friends: 011 502 4236 8031 or US Number 812 303 3382, usually checked once a day
- Don't forget your passport! It is a good idea to bring a photocopy of it in your checked baggage as a backup in case of problems
