In Psalm 101 David is saying that he will not only sing praise to God but that he will seek to lead a “blameless” life at home! Wow, right in front of those who know him best! He is determined to live a life that is blameless right in the place where he lets down and relaxes! That can be the place where being a Christian is the hardest. Notice how he sees this impacting his life. Verse 2 speaks of his walk at home being blameless. Verse 3 talks about what he looks at! He will not let evil deeds cling to him. Have you seen deeds on TV that you have started to own or at least defend? Are you, like me, sometimes embarrassed to realize you are cheering for the likeable character to succeed in his adultery or whatever just because he seems so nice?! What values cling to you after seeing what you see?
In verse 5, David says he will not listen to someone slandering his neighbor. How easy it is to listen to gossip, and to take part in it. And how easy it is to fish for more information. It is often a favorite sport of Christians to criticize those who are different from us. Is this the way I love my neighbor? Haughty eyes and a proud heart either allow us to slander or follow—either way they surely go together,. And God hates those with haughty eyes (Proverbs 6:17)!
As we prepare for our short term mission trip, it is equally important that we remember as we are rushing and maybe a bit stressed that it is also critically important that TODAY we are honoring God in our homes.
